Clam Corporation recently got a little help in their quest to teach children the joys of ice fishing. The Minnesota DNR saw a need in the state to teach a group of children about one of the states most famous sports and arranged a class at the United Cambodian Center near Minneapolis, Minn. The 40 hmong children who attended, between the ages of 8 and 12, were thrilled with what they found. While putting this community outreach program together for the group, Minn. DNR liason Tong Vang enlisted the help of Brian “Bro” Brosdahl and Randy Havel from Strikemaster. These two couldn’t have been happier to share their knowledge of how to get started.

According to Bro, the most important information the children and their parents were looking for was not techniques or secrets of the pros, but rather how to begin. They had questions about licenses, size requirements, and basic gear.

The children were genuinely excited about the sport and in turn, so were their parents. The perfectly attentive group has already planned their next outing with the DNR officer and is hoping to bring Bro along for the trip. The next “class” will consist of an on-ice event which TV program, Minnesota Bound, will film for an upcoming show.

Afterwards, Bro said, “What a great group. The parents and kids are already making plans to enjoy the sport this winter. Getting kids involved now is a great boon to our sport and I can’t wait to do this again.”

This was the first time for an event like this set up through the DNR and a community group, but both teachers and students found it to be exciting and extremely helpful. All involved plan to do more of these free clinics in the future and continue to share the excitement of ice fishing.
